About
Simplex Motus is Latin for ‘simple movement.’ It started as a coaching philosophy. A way of teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that prioritized understanding over memorization, principles over techniques, and adaptability over rigid systems. Over time, it grew into something larger. A publishing and education platform built around the belief that how we move reflects how we think, learn, and live.
The work is led by Max. He is a BJJ brown belt, instructor, and coach who has spent years working at the intersection of analytical problem-solving and physical education. That combination of clear thinking applied to human movement is the foundation of everything Simplex Motus produces.
Max is the author of more than a dozen books spanning grappling mechanics, coaching philosophy, athlete development, and personal growth. His flagship series, The Mechanics of Grappling, is a three-volume study of control, structure, and positioning. Other titles include Adaptive Grappler, The Language of Positions, Build the Athlete Not the Clone, Hexa Motus, The Decision Game series, and The Asian Cub. Each one is written in the same calm, observational voice that defines the Simplex Motus brand.
Beyond publishing, Simplex Motus encompasses a 12 Principles curriculum used in live instruction, a growing library of articles connecting Eastern philosophy to martial arts practice, a podcast exploring the deeper questions behind training and growth, and the BJJ Codex, an interactive reference platform for grapplers.
The name says it all. Simple movement. Not easy. Simple. Strip away what does not serve you. Understand what remains. Move from there.
