Principle 02
Position before submission
Control the position first and the submission arrives as a consequence. Chasing the finish before the position is stable trades a durable advantage for a temporary one.
Position before submission.
Why It Matters
- A submission attempted from an unstable position gives the opponent a free exit. The attack becomes the escape route.
- Position compounds. Every second of real control removes an option from the other person until only bad choices remain.
- Position is also how you stay safe. The person who holds the position decides the pace, and pace is what protects a long training career.
What It Looks Like in Jiu-Jitsu
- Back control: hands and legs fight for different things. Secure the seatbelt and the hooks and the choke stops being a race.
- Mount: the arm you want will present itself once the hips are heavy and the head is controlled. Reaching for it early usually returns you to guard.
- Guard passing: the pass is not complete when you clear the legs, it is complete when the opponent can no longer recover a frame.
The Common Mistake
Treating the submission as the goal and the position as the obstacle. The reverse is closer to the truth. The submission is the receipt for work that was already finished.
How to Train It
- Positional rounds where the top player scores only for holding, never for finishing.
- Count the options you have removed rather than the attacks you have started.
- Give yourself a rule: no submission attempt until you can hold the position for a full ten seconds without adjusting.
For Coaches
Score control in your rounds. Students chase what you reward, and a room that rewards finishes will produce grapplers who leak positions.
